The selection process for new members of NHS begins in December. Steps are as follows:

  1. All sophomores who have a GPA of 3.5 and all juniors and seniors who have a GPA of 3.3 are academically eligible. December 12, 2016, students who are academically eligible will be notified via an announcement list placed on the guidance office windows. A daily Bobcat bulletin announcement will alert students to the presence of this list.
  1. December 21, 2016, a meeting will be held after the posting of the candidates’ names for interested students to explain the application procedures. A packet containing application forms will be given to each interested student and emailed to all applicants’ school email. Completed forms will be submitted to the advisor by 3:15 on January 13, 2017, and these will be scanned for teachers to review. All teachers will receive a list of eligible students who have applied. Teachers will keep this list, as it will be given to their faculty council consultant during the voting process.
  1. All teachers are to look at the applications in the shared teacher folder and note any concerns about any of the candidates that they may have in the areas of leadership, character, scholarship, or service.
  1. During the week of February 13-17, 2017, each teacher will contact his or her assigned NHS faculty council member with his or her list of approved candidates and voice their concerns about those whose eligibility they may question.
  1. Based on the recommendations of teachers in their group, each faculty council member will submit their list of candidates’ names to the advisors, indicating “yes” to those they approve for nominations and “no” to those who should be denied membership. The advisors will tally each of the faculty council members’ votes. (These tallies remain confidential). Three out of the five faculty council members must have voted for a candidate, for the candidate to be selected.
  1. A meeting with the faculty council will be held the week of February 20-24, 2017 and selected candidates will be informed.
  1. The candidates are informed of their selection or denial by a letter by March 17, 2017.
  1. Induction is scheduled for April 6, 2017 at 7:30 in the old gym.

(The process of election is under the supervision and direction of the national office of NHS and designated in the handbook).
