Eating Breakfast Improves Behavior and Problem Solving

Sometimes it seems the older some kids get, the harder it is to get them to eat breakfast.

According to experts, parents who want their children to do well in school should insist on breakfast. Studies show that students who eat breakfast:
  • Think faster and more clearly.
  • Solve classroom problems more easily.
  • Are less fidgety and disruptive.
Students who do not eat breakfast are less attentive. They are also less stable emotionally and they don't use and recall information as well.

How can you get your child to eat breakfast? One way is to eat together. Kids are more apt to eat if they have company.

Another way to get a teen to eat breakfast is to prepare a "grab and go" breakfast. Just include items from the basic food groups. For instance:
  • For a grain, serve whole grain toast (maybe with peanut butter on it for protein) or some low-sugar cereal.
  • For dairy, a slice of cheese, or some yogurt or glass of milk.
  • For fruit, a banana, apple or orange.
