Technology Myths

All of the following are myths about technology use.  How many did you think were facts?

1. You shouldn't charge your gadget overnight
Most devices will automatically stop charging before they are fully charged.  Just make sure your device isn't under paper, pillows, sheets, etc.

2. Don't use third-party chargers
Third-party chargers are OK.  They are produced by a reputable company.  However, don't purchase a knockoff charger.  Those are chargers that claim they are manufactured by a name brand but are priced way too low (which is a sign they are a knockoff).  Never use a knockoff charger!

3. You have to let your battery drain to zero before charging
Most lithium-ion batteries (pretty much the standard) will last longer if you keep them between 40% and 80%.  In fact, if you let the battery drain to zero repeatedly, they could be permanently damaged.  Or worse, they could become dangerous.

4. Always shut down your computer at night
You don't need to shut it down every night.  However, many updates only happen when you shut down your computer.  Shutting down a few times each week is a good idea to keep your computer working well.

5. You need to defragment your hard drive
Not necessary!  If you've never heard of this... no need to worry.

6. You can completely wipe data
You never completely erase your data.  While there are ways to erase your hard drive, they will erase everything.  Before selling your computer, remove the hard drive or someone may be able to access personal information.

7. Private browsing is totally private
There is no such thing as browsing in private.  Records are kept by the service provider or is burried deeply in storage areas on your computer.
