Flash drives (also called thumb drives) are fantastic devices for storing information when using a PC.  They are small, easy to carry, and can hold a lot of data.  However, incorrect use can result in the drive being damaged and/or losing all of your stored data.

Many people use the same flash drive day after day.  However, flash drives were never designed to be used in this way.  In fact, according to Ace Data Recovery, flash drives should not be use for frequently updated files.

It is important to never unplug the drive while it is reading or writing files.   You should use the Safely Remove Mass Storage Device option from the bottom tray of your computer.  If you simply grab the flash drive and pull it out of your computer, there is a high possibility that you may lose access to the content on the drive.

Keep your flash drive from high temperatures, humidity, and pressure.  Any of these things can cause the drive to malfunction. Do not store them in a car, in direct sunlight, in your pocket, etc.

You should always keep a backup of your data in the Cloud or on an external hard drive.  Don't rely solely on a flash drive being a safe storage method.  With a little care and forethought, you won't run the risk of losing the data you have worked so hard to create.
