Bernard Elementary consists of six regular education classrooms, one special needs classroom, a media center, gymnasium, and guidance office. It is one of six elementary schools in the Western Dubuque Community School District. Bernard is a small community of approximately 100 residents. The student population at Bernard Elementary is made up of children in rural Bernard, from near New Melleray Abbey south to Leisure Lake.

Bernard Elementary was constructed in 1963 with an addition in 1967. The building sits on 10 acres and is located on the south side of Bernard next to Bernard Commercial Club Park.
