WHO RUNS?
When making varsity meet lineups there are several factors that go into the decision making process. Ideally we like PR's to play the largest role in determining a line up. Consistency in times is also important. Sometimes an athlete will have a PR that they only ran once. When determining a line up the coaches can take an athlete who has is consistently faster even though that person might not have the fastest actual PR. Effort in practice is always considered when determining who will give us the best effort at a meet. Additionally, we often take someone who can contribute to more than one event over an athlete who can only be entered in one event. In short, each meet’s lineup is up to the coach’s discretion. If an athlete or parent feels the lineup does not best fit our goals as a program we invite conversation about ways we can better each meets lineup.
DRAKE RELAYS
Participation in the Drake Relays is limited to the most elite athletes and teams in the state. The Drake Relays are not sanctioned by the Iowa High School Athletic Association and are therefore a privilege funded completely by the track program. At Western Dubuque our number one goal is to compete well at the state competition. In our preparation to compete well at state we put a great emphasis on our athletes running multiple events at each track meet. We believe the more we compete the better we will be. To qualify for the Drake Relays athletes must still be able to run multiple events to help with our goal of winning the team championship at each meet we participate in. Rarely we might keep an athlete “fresh” in order to run a faster time. At no time will we keep a complete team “fresh” in order to qualify. If the team has the ability to qualify they must be elite enough to keep our goal of running multiple events each track meet.
